Importance of Exercise
Exercise is a great way to support your dog’s overall physical health, mental wellbeing, as well as overall behavior!
Regular physical activity can help your dog maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems like heart disease and joint issues. According to research, overweight dogs are 4x more likely to develop skin issues (due to difficulties keeping themselves clean with the extra weight), diabetes, and hypothyroidism. They’re 3x more likely to develop mobility issues, and 2x more likely to develop respiratory issues. The lifespan of an overweight dog is 2.5 years shorter, on average, than the lifespan of a healthy dog.
Dogs that receive adequate amounts of exercise are also less likely to develop behavioral problems like anxiety, excessive barking, and destructive behaviors. Exercise can help pets relieve pent-up energy, reducing hyperactivity and promoting a calm disposition.
The amount of exercise your dog needs varies on age, breed, and lifestyle. For puppies, we recommend about five minutes of walking for each month of age. For a four-month-old puppy, that is approximately a twenty-minute walk – which can be done once or twice a day. We discourage excessive exercise for puppies, as it can damage developing joints. For adult dogs, we recommend thirty minutes to up to two hours of exercise per day, depending on size and energy levels. For smaller dogs, thirty minutes may be sufficient, while large, high-energy dogs may need two hours. Senior dogs also need exercise to stay healthy, but it can be less intense and for shorter durations. Always be mindful of your dog’s health as well as the weather. Too much time in the sun can result in heat stroke, so always ensure you have adequate water and shade.
Next time you hit the park with your friend, make sure you bring SodaPup’s Natural Rubber Flying Disc or Ware of the Dog’s Striped Boiled Wool Ball to play an active game of fetch. Or go on a swift walk with tadazhi’s Organic Woven Cotton Dog Leash. Whatever you choose, keep your best bud moving every day. Movement is medicine!
